The Clio coat of arms

KCL Clio Committee Members

Iolo McGregor, KCL Clio Society Iolo McGregor
President

When asked what my position on the Clio Committee entailed, my mind immediately drifted off to endless champagne parties and holidays paid for at the expense of Society members – ‘Hmmm’, I thought, ‘I’m on to a good thing here!’
Unfortunately, in reality I am plagued by sleepless nights and the constant feeling that I’ve forgotten something. As President the weight of the Society and the responsibility to listen and balance the opinions and attitudes of all its members rests on me, always with a view to doing what is best in the long and short term, continuing Clio’s appeal and reputation. It is a remarkable honour to have been given this opportunity to offer something back to a Society, Department and College that arenow very much a part of who I am. I intend for the Clio society, more than ever,to bring its members together through brilliant parties, fun socials and unique events.

Michael Townsend, KCL Clio Society Michael Townsend
Secretary and Vice-President

My position in the Committee is twofold. As Secretary I run the administrative side of the Society, such as minute writing, and the allocation of various taskings to the other Committee members. As Vice-President I support Iolo in his role, and provide another valuable leadership aspect. In my spare time, I’m in the University of London Officer Training Corps, a Territorial Army unit forstudents, which is incredibly rewarding. Over the coming year, I
hope the Society can offer a good social environment to historians – a group who due to the very nature of the course don’t socialise enough with each other!

Kat Joel, KCL Clio Society Kat Joel
Treasurer

As Treasurer of the Society, it is my responsibility to organise how the Committee spends the money it receives from sponsorship, membership subs and the grant from the Student Union. Aside from that, I will be helping other committee members to fulfil any tasks with which they may need extra assistance such as being involved in sponsorship for the Society (if Jon needs me) and playing a part in organising socials and lectures (if Sonul and Hollie need me). I hope the Society will enable new and old history students to meet each other as this may not be possible otherwise with the fragmented nature of the course. I hope the Society will be able to offer interesting lectures, socials and even a trip abroad to freshers as well as second and third year students.

Sonul Badiani, KCL Clio Society Sonul Badiani
Social Secretary

As Social Secretary, I hope to introduce students to the vibrancy and excitement that London has to offer. Being at King’s, in the heart of the capital, is an incredible opportunity and one that must be taken full advantage of! As students of history, we are fortunate to be studying in a city boasting rich cultural heritage with world renowned architecture, museums and an unparalleled cosmopolitan nightlife. Throughout the year, I will be organising events that encompass these unique attributes that will help you make the most of your time at King’s!

Hollie Russell, KCL Clio Society Hollie Russell
Vocational Secretary

My role in the Committee is Vocational Secretary and I will be responsible for organising the guest lecture series for the coming year. We are inviting many experts in their field to enlighten and entertain our Clio members over the year. We will be organising a programme which may include historians, politicians, academics and successful alumni to speak on a variety of topics; I hope many people will attend and enjoy! I am also acting as Careers Liaison Officer next year which involves communicating with the careers department at King’s and hopefully aiding History students with careers information. This will be a new and important role for the Clio Society, especially since History students so often have no clue what career paths are available to them. I know the Committee are excited and enthusiastic about the opportunities over the coming year. I’m very happy to be a part of it!

Andrew Cruickshank, KCL Clio Society Andrew Cruickshank
Support Officer

My role on the Clio Committee is to help out the other members as they have a shed load of stuff to do this year for the Society – we're all hoping to make this year FANTASTIC and lots of work is going into making that the case. As Support Officer I seem to be involved in everything, but with varying degrees of involvement. Part of my role is apparently to dress up as a clown for Freshers’ Fair, so keep your eyes peeled for me! A reason why I’m involved with the Clio Committee is that I hope through it we can foster a sense of community within the history department. We have sooooo many things which have been planned/ are being planned. I hope you all get involved!

Clive Gilbert, KCL Clio Society Clive Gilbert
Clio Publications Editor

In many ways my position on the Clio Committee is much like the one Winston Churchill relished as editor of the British Gazette during the General Strike of 1926. I’m in charge of publicising the actions and decrees of fellow Committee members, thinking up emotive headlines to sway our public sentiment in our favour and occasionally calling for the use of tanks against dissenters. Okay, I may be overstating my case a bit (particularly with my last point) and I very much hope this year’s Committee will have the firm support of all its members. With the help of my associate editors, Hannah Curtis and Natasha Wynarczyk, I will be launching a new termly student-led magazine for the department and we encourage everyone to get involved. The magazine will feature news from around the department, stories on current affairs of historical significance, reports on Clio trips and other jollies, and articles about the ups and downs of London life, including a section on arts and leisure. Above all, our main priority is to provide an outlet through which King’s historians, student or professional, can express themselves.

Jonathon Cooper, KCL Clio Society Jonathon Cooper
Support Officer

For the 2007/2008 academic session, my role on the Clio Society is to manage the society’s sub-committee for sponsorship and advertising. The goal for both myself and the team of people that I work with is to help generate extra funding for the society’s activities by selling advertising within society publications, and trying to sponsor some of the more high profile social events that we intend to hold throughout the year. Within this, I’ll be looking to build a network of contacts that future committees could call on for extra funding with a view to holding bigger events that will allow the society to grow in both size and stature. Throughout the year, I’ll also be looking to involve some first years within the sponsorship team, to help provide another view on things, and to ensure that in future years, there are members of the society with the expertise and experience to go further with fundraising, and continue to support our vibrant, growing society.
