Friday, February 8 - Pilgrimage to Karl Marx's Grave, Highgate Cemetary Trip
On Friday, February 8, Clio and the lovely Dr. Michael Rowe are going to Highgate Cemetary to visit Karl Marx. We have spoken to the Trust that manages the cemetery, and they are happy to receive us at 2:00pm that afternoon (last admission is 3.30). There is a small entrance fee of £3.00 per person.

As luck would have it, Dr. Rowe is lecturing on Marx at 12:00on that Friday in room 3B20, and will leave King's at 1pm. He is happy for people to join him for the journey up to Highgate (Northern Line to Archway, and then either by bus on or foot to the cemetery). By the way, we would recommend good walking shoes, as the paths may be muddy at this time of year!

Being a society ever motivated by drink, afterwards we plan to wonder up to the Flask after for drinks! Hope to see you all there!

KRAKOW - February 9-13, 2008! Trip
COME FEBRUARY, CLIO IS GOING ABROAD AGAIN!!! WOOP!!! (come February, any excuse to go abroad will be a welcome one!)
As most of you will know by now, Clio and Dr. Jim Bjork have shacked up to go to Krakow in Poland. Once the capital of the medieval and early modern Polish kingdom its old town centre remains one of the best-preserved in Europe, and as is known by the organizers of stag and hen parties throughout the UK, food and drink is cheap and plentiful! Even by eating in the more expensive restaurants you'll be hard pressed to spend as much as on a night-out in London - You'd actually be saving! It'll be cold, but the city is beautiful in the snow, and we do not expect flights and accommodation to cost more than £150.

Within the city itself there's lots to see, including the Medieval Royal Residence, Wawel Castle; the Wawel Cathedral; the Medieval Jewish quarter, Kazimierz; and for the more adventurous, the Stalinist model city, Nowa Huta, just to the east of Krakow. There will also be the choice of optional excursions outside the city to Oświęcim (Auschwitz-Birkenau): Consists of main museum at the original concentration camp (Auschwitz I) and remnants of the death camp at Birkenau (Auschwitz II). A difficult but worthwhile and unforgettable place to visit. Finally, there is also the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the only mine in the world operating continuously since the Middle Ages. It features a number of spectacular underground chambers with all decorations (altarpieces, chandeliers etc) carved out of salt.

To keep the trip to manageable proportions, it will be capped at 25, so please do let us know as soon as possible if you are intending to come.

Tuesday, January 29 - "Grappling with Auschwitz" by Dr. Lars Fischer. Lecture
This is to introduce you to the beginning of Clio's 2008 lecture programme! Our first talk will be delivered by Dr. Lars Fischer on the holocaust, entitled 'Grappling with Auschwitz'. The talk will take place on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 6:00pm in room 4KU.12 at the Strand Campus.

Dr. Fischer (FRHistS), formerly a lecturer of Modern Europe at King's, is Lecturer in German History in the Department of German at UCL and an Honorary Research Fellow in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Department. He studied Modern History at Queen Mary and Westfield College and received the University of London's Derby Bryce Prize in 2000. Awarded a Major Graduate School Research Scholarship, he was a PhD student and Postgraduate Teaching Assistant in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Department from 2000 to 2003. He has held fellowships at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Fellow in Washington, DC (2005) and the Deutsches Literaturarchiv in Marbach (2006).

A renowned authority on Jewish history, Lars has agreed to deliver for us his outstanding talk on the Holocaust. I was privileged to hear this talk some two years ago at King's, and it really does still stand out in my mind. I strongly advise you all to attend. He addresses the topic with remarkable style and sensitivity. The lecture will start at 6:00pm.
